Jimmy Garoppolo throws four batters in a big win in the 49ers: ‘Today was probably the best whole game we’ve ever put together’

The four TD throws were the most in an NFL game in Mexico, according to NFL research, and it was also Garoppolo’s first four-touchdown outing since Week 14 of 2019. It was also a showcase for just how strong San Francisco’s offense is. When she’s at her best and exploits attacking all-stars.

“I feel good about it all. I didn’t even know that, four touchdowns and everything,” said Garoppolo, who was 20-of-29 for 228 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions, and a £131.9 rating. “I thought the guys were making plays all night, though, everyone was coming along when their number was called. The guys came up and made plays, the O-line gave me a lot of time, always making things easier. It was a good night.”

As Garoppolo performed, everyone participated.

Tight end George Kittle had his best-productive play of the season, hauling a pair of touchdowns on four catches for 84 yards. Wide receiver Brandon Ayuk scored two touchdowns on his block. Christian McCaffrey has continued to thrive since gaining 106 scrimmage yards. Elijah Mitchell (nine tackles for 59 yards) came out strong in the second half to knock out a beleaguered Cardinals defense. Then there was Deebo Samuel, who turned in the highlight reel on a 39-yard run to go with seven catches.

“When you have playmakers like us, it allows you to do everything,” Garoppolo said. “It’s just a ‘what’s the defense – going to try – to take it away’ kind of thing. If they try to get rid of the run, we’ll throw it, if they try to get rid of in the middle of the field, we’ll throw it out. You know, we’ve got a lot of playmakers in this. Attacking, and that makes it my job to take them easy.”

Although everyone was involved, on Monday the approach was different.

San Francisco had just seven rushing attempts in the first half, which is tied for second-fewest in Shanahan’s tenure dating back to 2017. Garoppolo caught the ball and delivered, completing 14 of 21 passes in the first half for 153 yards with Scoring pass of 7 yards to Ayuk and 39 yards to Keitel. Those touchdowns started a streak of four straight scoring hits in which the Niners overcame a 3-0 deficit and turned the game into a blowout. This allowed them to reverse course in the second half, as Garoppolo only threw the ball eight times.

When the Garoppolo is on, so are the 49ers.

The Niners improved Monday to 14-0 when Garoppolo makes no interceptions, according to NFL Research. It’s the longest such streak by any quarterback in the QBs’ illustrious San Francisco history, having broken a tie between Garoppolo, Joe Montana, and Colin Kaepernick.

And so Monday was Garoppolo’s third consecutive game without an international IQ and the Niners’ third straight win. They’re back first in the NFC West and are rolling along.

“I think over the past two weeks we’ve put together some good games,” Garoppolo said. “Today was probably our best complete game, but we still have a long way to go, there are some yards left there and even some points left there, so it’s good that the guys are still hungry.”

Amidst an array of star performers, Garoppolo starred Monday night in Mexico City.
