If you’ve ever wondered which woman really inspired John Mayer’s Grammy-winning song “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” you’re in luck.
In a conversation with Alex Cooper on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Meyer finally comes clean about rumors that he wrote a song for a famous woman he was dating in 2001.
“It was about my first girlfriend,” Meyer explained.
“This was about the feeling, which I think was really kind of nostalgic. I was 21 when I wrote that song and I had the nostalgia of a 16-year-old.”
John Mayer reveals the moment he decided to stop drinking:
The song, released in 2001 from Mayer’s debut album “Room for Squares,” quickly gained attention for its ambiguous lyrics and the mysterious subject matter behind its creation.
Because the singer was dating actress Jennifer Love Hewitt at the time, tabloids assumed the song was about her.
He said of the perception that the song was about a celebrity he dated: “That’s one of those things people kind of made up that idea.” “It gets cemented over the years… I had never met anyone famous when I wrote that song.”

Over the years, Mayer has built up a reputation for his illustrious dating history.
In addition to Hewitt, Meyer has dated Jennifer Aniston, Katy Perry, and Jessica Simpson, and was famously linked to Taylor Swift, along with many others.
Despite what people might think of his dating history, Meyer doesn’t necessarily believe he deserves the labels he’s been given.
“I have a couple of nameplates like ‘lothario’ and ‘womenizer’ and stuff. I think — look, this is this. This is the role I’m playing in the big TV show that I didn’t write. This he said before pointing out: ‘Maybe I had a hand in it or something like that”.
Part of the appeal of Mayer’s music is guessing whose songs she writes.
“I don’t write songs about it People. I do not write it for people or about people. I might use a relationship that inspires me to write something. Well, even if I’m writing a song because of someone, it just seems like that goes away, and I stay with the song,” Meyer said about what or who inspires him to write his music.
Although he did reveal the particular lady that “Your Body is a Wonderland” was written about, don’t expect to crack the code about who he refers to in his other tunes.
“I don’t like telling anyone the song is about a person because most of the time the song isn’t. And it takes people away from themselves because they’re just imagining who I’m writing about.”

“The songs that come out, they mean things to people — sometimes people think they’re about one person,” he explained. “Sometimes the song hurts, and sometimes the song doesn’t do well because people say, ‘Well, it’s just crap. ‘” And I say “It has nothing to do with that. But I’d rather keep the sanctity of these songs intact… burn a couple of them because people think it’s about one person and not… the most important thing in my life right now is my songs.”
