An American werewolf in London

Photo: Arrow Films

Type: Horror/comedy
the show length: 1h37m
Director: John Landis
Throw: David Naughton, Griffin Dunn

This shaggy horror comedy stars Naughton and Dunne as David and Jack, two college students whose chance encounter with a lycanthrope changes one of their lives, and ends the other. In Visits from Beyond the Grave, Jack begs David to distance himself so he doesn’t lash out at others, but David may have something with the woman who is nursing him back to health. This bizarre film around the clock has been augmented with synthetic effects by the legendary Rick Baker, which are just as haunting and stunning as they were in 1981.

Michael Jai White as Isaiah Bone in Blood and Bone

Photo: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Type: Martial Arts / Action
the show length: 1h 33m
Director: Ben Ramsey
Throw: Michael Jai White, Julian Sands, Eamon Walker

I am a big fan of direct-to-video action films, specifically martial arts films. But where did this love come from? A special week where I watched three of my all-time favorite movies: Universal Soldier: Judgment DayAnd the Undisputed II: Last Man StandingAnd the blood and bone.

in blood and boneMichael Jai White (who also stars Undisputed IIwritten and starred in black dynamite) plays Isaiah Bone (yes), an ex-Marine and ex-con who is an amazing martial artist. He is persuaded by a promoter named Pinball (Dante Basco) to join an underground fighting ring, which puts him on a collision course with a ringleader (Eamonn Walker) and a large group of capable fighters.

This movie sees White face off against former professional fighters Kimbo Slice, Bob Sapp, and Matt Mullins, among many other electric fights. The stunning choreography takes full advantage of White’s amazing physique and incredible kicking ability, and it’s an amazing display of hard-hitting bodies in motion. –people house

With iconic quotes (“Would you rather be a ‘fashion victim’ or a ‘collective challenge’?), standout performances (Paul Rudd smiles!) and iconic costumes, ignorant Simply put: creative. Writer and director Amy Heckerling (Fast times at Ridgemont High) delivered this high school movie all the time which is set in Beverly Hills. It is loosely based on the book by Jane Austen whateverThe film stars Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz, a rich and popular student who takes new girl Ty (Brittany Murphy) under her wing.

To be honest, I really doubt there are many people reading this who haven’t seen it ignorant. This entry is a reminder that you should watch ignorant repeatedly. you are welcome. —PV

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

A man (Donald Sutherland) examines the face of a body entangled in a strange web-like skin of zigzag fibers.

Image: Warner Bros. HomeEntertainment

Type: Sci-fi/horror
the show length: 1 h 55 d
Director: Philip Kaufman
Throw: Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Leonard Nimoy

Philip Kaufman’s 1978 remake of Philip Kaufman’s 1956 science fiction film updates the original setting from a rural California town to the heart of bustling downtown Los Angeles. The film follows Matthew (Donald Sutherland) and Elizabeth (Brooke Adams), two scientists and co-workers who stumble upon a terrible secret: humanity is being overrun by a secret invasion of plant-like aliens bent on overrunning the entire planet.

Featuring terrific supporting performances by Jeff Goldblum and Leonard Nimoy, not to mention a terrific cameo by Kevin McCarthy (star of the 1956 version), Kaufman’s film is a clever reinterpretation that updates the original film’s premise without losing any of the paranoia. 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers Not only is it considered one of the greatest cinematic remakes of all time, but it is one of the greatest works of horror and science fiction cinema ever made. From the movie’s Into Another World beginning to its iconic and shocking finale, it’s hard to argue otherwise. -The

Jackie Brown

Jackie Brown (Pam Grier) and Max Cherry (Robert Forrester) look lovingly at each other in Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown.

Type: crime drama
the show length: 2h 34m
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Throw: Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster

There’s no better time than the present to see the best Quentin Tarantino movie of all time (and by a small margin). I said it and I meant it.

Adapted from Elmore Leonard’s wonderful novel rum punchThis crime thriller stars the inimitable Pam Grier as a flight attendant caught returning money from Mexico for an arms dealer (Samuel L. Jackson). When a bail bondsman (Robert Forrester) is tasked with bringing her in, the two forge an unlikely bond in the midst of an elaborate scheme.

There are many reasons for love Jackie Brown – Tarantino’s most disturbing writing tics have been greatly influenced by the fact that this is an adaptation, and the electric cast includes Robert De Niro, Bridget Fonda, Michael Keaton, and Chris Tucker. But my favorite part of this movie is how romantic it is. The chemistry between Grier and Forster as two medieval characters unexpectedly fall for one another is electric, and it’s one of my favorite movie pairings to ever grace the screen. –PV

There, Mary studies magic and uncovers a startling secret about a rare flower whose immense magical properties threaten the entire world when it falls into the wrong hands.

Despite its lack of the thematic or emotional clarity of films like Kiki delivery servicee or Prince MononokeAnd the Mary and the Witch’s Flower Nevertheless, it’s both a visually pleasing movie and an earnest love letter to Studio Ghibli’s body of work by some of the studio’s most talented former artists and animators. -The
