James Corden says he’s “not a self-confident person” and is striving for fame

James Corden has revealed that he’s not a “confident kid” who likes to go out and drink beer – but instead is an introvert.

The TV presenter, 44 – best known as Gavin and Stacey’s lovable Smithy – says people have misconceptions about him after seeing his well-known character on the show.

He also told in a new interview how he struggled with fame in the beginning as he wondered if people liked him for him or liked his character in Smithy.

He told The Times: ‘I think I was very panicked. I didn’t know how to deal with it, and there was also something of people saying, “Ah, Smithy!” and what are you doing?

“They expect to meet this really confident boy, or the beer-drinking boy, and I’m really not a boy, you know?

I am a musical theater player. I don’t drink beer. Maybe G&T liked the slim one. I didn’t know what people wanted from me.

He added that he never told you that you had to deal with fame and that you had to “find it out along the way” because he admitted he was “interwoven” in whether people like him or his good personality.

It comes as he and his family prepare to leave Los Angeles to return to his native UK, with the move following a major backlash after he was accused of abusing staff at a restaurant.

In the same interview with The Times, he claimed that he quit The Late Late Show to spend more time with his children – Max, 11, as well as daughters Carrie, eight, and Charlotte, four.

The star – who is married to TV producer Julia Carey, 46 – remembered having to cancel a family vacation, which ended up being the last straw.

James said he remembers his childhood fondly and didn’t want to miss those precious years with his kids, so he decided to quit The Late Late Show.

The interview came as the comedian’s reputation took a hit, after Keith McNally – the British owner of upscale New York restaurant Balthazar – dubbed him “a little creatine for a man”.

In a series of scathing posts on social media, McNally claimed that the comedian reprimanded servers on two separate occasions and said he was planning to ’86’ – ban – Corden from his restaurant.

Thinking of the backlash, James called it the “most surreal” and “very weird” moment in which he admitted he doesn’t read anything about himself on the internet.

He also doubled down on his denial that he had “yelled” or “cursed” anyone because he insisted that no degrading language be used.

He said of the many “bad stories” circulating about him: “I just stopped reading them. I just wouldn’t. I don’t Google myself, I don’t read anything about myself.

According to McNally, one of James’s raucous comments came after he found a hair in his meal which prompted him to demand free rounds of drinks and threaten to post bad comments on Yelp.

The second time around, the actor was blown away when his wife Julia was served an egg yolk omelet that also contained a trace of egg white – which the comedian later claimed she was allergic to.

He called McNally to apologize for his behavior, but reignited the controversy in an interview with the New York Times, in which he said the drama was “under me” and denied any wrongdoing.

He also complained about the backlash, telling the newspaper, “I feel Zayn about the whole thing. Because I think it’s so ridiculous. I just think it’s under all of us. It’s under you. It’s definitely below your post.”

The interview then sparked a response from McNally who demanded that Corden apologize to the servers he allegedly offended.
