James Gunn talks about his book “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” in a few hours and the latest in his latest movie “Guardians”

James Gunn’s world has never been more eventful than it is now.

The director of the film is ready to release Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special Out November 25 on Disney+, also in post-production Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, his final film in the Marvel Studios franchise. Last but not least, he’s just become co-president and co-CEO of DC Studios, along with producer Peter Safran, and the duo is busy planning the next decade of storytelling.

The holiday Special It revolves around the efforts of Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) to help Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) rediscover his love for Christmas, so they decide to give him his favorite actor, Kevin Bacon. It took Gunn only a few hours to write the script for the 44-minute presentation.

“I’ll be honest, I wrote the script in a few hours, so it just kind of leaked out to me. It was very easy,” Gunn said. Hollywood Reporter. “Everything about filming was easy. Everything about getting performances out of people was easy, while Vol. 3 It was torture in every way.”

Gunn also has an update on Vol. 3Developed in post production.

“It’s a big movie, and it’s very different from the special because the special is so weird and crazy. The movie is so emotional, but it was a real joy to make. So, it comes off wonderfully,” Gunn shares. “I still have a lot of VFX shots working on, and of course, juxtaposing the score with John Murphy, which is huge. So those are the things I’ve been focusing on a lot lately.”

In a recent conversation with THRGunn also explains the advantages of shooting private videos and Vol. 3 At the same time.

James Gunn, congratulations in more ways than one.

(Laugh.) Thank you so much.

Was Kevin Bacon the seed of this idea?

Well, the crux of the idea was just to do a holiday special. I love the holidays, I love birthday cakes, and I love getting together with my family and giving each other gifts. It’s my favorite time of the year. As a child, I loved star Wars holiday specialbut I also loved Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer. I still think [How the Grinch Stole Christmas!] It is one of the greatest cartoons of all time. So the idea of doing a private vacation with the Guardians was really funny to me and also something I really wanted to do. And as soon as I sat down and started trying to figure out what the story was, the idea for Kevin Bacon came along very, very quickly, and I wrote the whole story in a few hours.

“Introducing Kevin Bacon” is a funny joke in the opening credits. Was there any union red tape you had to navigate?

No, I don’t think so. Kevin has agreed by saying, “Introducing Kevin Bacon.” When we showed him the trailer and he said, “Introducing Kevin Bacon,” he lost it. He lost it. So we knew we’d probably be fine with that.

Just out of curiosity, if Kevin wasn’t available for this, which favorite musical of Peter (Chris Pratt) would you have sent next to Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff)?

Oh, I don’t know. Peter Quill was very young when he left Earth, so I’m not sure how conscious he is. When I was eight years old, I knew who the Monkees were, but I don’t know who would have been famous in 1987 and who Peter would have loved when he was still on earth. MC Hammer, perhaps.

How is the publication going? Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?

amazing. it’s great. It’s a big movie, and it’s very different from the special because the special is so weird and crazy. The movie is very emotional, but making it was a real pleasure. So it comes off great. I still have a lot of VFX shots to work on, and of course, I’m juggling the score with John Murphy, which is huge. These are the things I’ve been focusing on a lot lately.

Did you photograph the special dish once it was packaged? Vol. 3?

I shot them one at a time. One of the great benefits of the special was the ability to insert elements into the movie that I don’t have to explain at the beginning of the movie, like Cosmo the Spacedog [Maria Bakalova] Or the fact that they live in Head of Knowhere, their new residence, or introduce their spaceship, Bowie, which is, in fact, this four-story set. It’s the most amazing kit I’ve ever used and so we were able to take advantage of those kits that we had the money to build for Vol. 3, in private. Otherwise we wouldn’t have had that kind of money to build these million dollar kits.

So are you ready for an influx of articles about a specific sound that Kevin Bacon does?

I didn’t even think about it, but I’ve already been asked several times today. (Laugh.) I don’t really think this stuff, but yeah, I’m ready for people to bring it up. I realize now that it’s something I didn’t realize much at the time. I mean, I knew it was funny when you did that, but you know…

“Gan was leaving a trail of bread crumbs all the time.” I can see her now.

(Laugh.) Can.

When I saw Sean Gunn’s character, Kraglin, in the opening scene, I immediately thought of you and your brothers at Christmas. What are your memories of Christmas together?

Christmas was a wonderful time in my family. My family was a crazy place to grow up in, but at Christmas people really get away most of the time. Of course, we have those famous family fights over the Christmas period too, but there are six of us in my family. So the six of us sit at the top of the stairs, and my parents open those doors so we can go down and open all the Christmas presents or look at the Christmas presents. It was not usually wrapped; They were under the tree. And so those were fun times, with my family. And it always gave me the opportunity to really get together with family and be there with my family during the holiday season. This is why I love Christmas, and therefore the holiday special, for me, is quite unsultry. It’s funny because it’s not what you might expect, but it’s not poignant because I love Christmas. it’s great.

It sure was nice to hear “Smashing Pumpkins” again. Did you have “Christmas” in mind too early?

Yes, the music you chose too early. I’ll be honest, I wrote the script in a few hours, so it kinda leaked out to me. It was very easy. Everything about photography was easy. Everything about getting shows out of people was easy, while Vol. 3 It was torture in every way. And so it was like going between those two things. So it was really fun and easy, and the result was instant.

On a sad note, it was a moment to hear Low’s song “Just Like Christmas” given what’s happened recently.

what happened?

Mimi Parker, singer and co-drummer for Low, passed away two weeks ago.

Wow, actually I didn’t know that until now. Oh my God, this is so sad.

So that moment with their song took on a whole new meaning for me while watching, but I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

no it’s okay. thanks for telling me. Oh my God, awesome.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special

The old 97’s Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

Jessica Millett

Besides buying their Amoeba records, can you share your history with Old 97’s?

They’ve been my favorite band since the ’90s, and I’ve seen them in concert a billion times. I met [lead vocalist] Rhett Miller in 2005’s Because I Put Old 97 at an End slid, my first movie. It plays over the end credits, and Rhett and I have stayed in touch ever since. And so I started writing this song in the beginning [of the special], “I don’t know what Christmas is (but Christmas is here).” So I had all these words for her, and she just kept changing. I was walking around my house, singing into my iPhone and trying to figure out how to do the song. Finally, I approached Rhett and asked, “Will you help me write this song? Because I can’t do it myself.” And he said, “Sure.” And so we started sending a lot of recordings and lyrics back and forth, and we wrote that song together.

And after we wrote that song, I was like, “Why don’t you guys play this weird band? Why don’t you come in and act?” And he was like, “Okay.” Then we took an earlier song that they had recorded, and re-recorded it with Kevin Bacon at the end of the show. So Rhett had to act, and he’s never acted before. He said, “I’m really nervous about it. I just don’t know what to do.” So I said, “This is like when I saw the Doobie Brothers What is happening!! when I was a kid. They were terrible actors, but that almost added to the charm. So, if you’re a bad actor, it’s fine. I don’t care if you’re a bad actor.” Instead, he was great. He’s great in the role. So it was all really interesting.

Can they really perform in clothes and prosthetics?

Yes, they are fully played. It was amazing. These guys are the greatest guys in the world, but they had to be in hell because people complain so much about that makeup when they’re in it. But they didn’t complain once. They sang and played their instruments for eight hours, and kept coming and going, track after track. So they were amazing. They’re just the greatest players, not to mention the greatest musicians. So I hope this turns more people back into the old 97 era.
