Indiana Jones. dew. Henry Jones Jr. Whatever you call him, whip-cracking archaeologist Harrison Ford with Nazi punches and fun for archeology is cinema’s ultimate hero–a man whose image conjures up the smell of popcorn and the thrill of adventure on the big screen. Over the decades, he’s fought fascists, faced off with the Ark of the Covenant (albeit with his eyes closed), retrieved the Sankara Stones, drunk from the Holy Grail, and confronted multidimensional life. And it’s not over yet: 15 years after his last Indy outing, Harrison Ford wears a fedora for the last time at the yet-to-be-titled game Indiana Jones 5. Now, in a global exclusive, Empire offers your first look at his epic comeback.

In the new issue, we get the first word on the film bringing the iconic hero back to the screen – and promising his star all the action, passion, spectacle and unexpected turns that only Indiana Jones can offer. “It’s full of adventure, full of laughter, full of real feelings. It’s complex and sneaky,” said Harrison Ford empire. Returning to the world of Indy was no mean feat. “Shooting it was hard, long and arduous,” he says. “But I’m very happy with the movie we have.”

So why go back? 2008 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Our hero is left happily married to Karen Allen’s Marion Ravenwood. But while he found Indy older and perhaps wiser than what we saw in the original trilogy, he wasn’t necessarily the end. This is the place Indiana Jones 5 Come. “I just thought it would be nice to see one where Indiana Jones is at the end of his run,” Ford explains. “If a script came out that I felt gave me a way to expand the character.”

This screenplay comes from Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, writing alongside director James Mangold – The Logan And the Ford V Ferrari A filmmaker, now faces the daunting task of following Steven Spielberg (here as producer). For Mangold, it was all about the challenge of creating a ultimate Indiana Jones movie. “It became really important for me to figure out how to make this a movie about a hero at sunset,” he says, noting that he’s taken the film even further in that direction. “The issues I raised about Indy’s age weren’t things I thought were addressed in the material being developed at the time. There were ‘old’ jokes, but the material itself wasn’t about it. For me, whatever your biggest responsibility is you have to fly straight towards That. If you try to pretend it’s not there, you end up getting slings and arrows all the way through.”
