The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Next Gen Update – Cross save and cross progression explained
From December 14th, any player who owns The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be treated to a free next-gen update. This update gives players access to improved graphics as well as new missions, cosmetics, and more, all for free if you already own the game. Those who do not own the game will be able to purchase The Witcher 3: Complete Edition, which includes the next-gen update as well as the game’s narrative expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. In addition to all this content, developer CD Projekt RED has also implemented a new online feature in The Witcher 3. This feature gives players access to Through progress and mutual preservation. Essentially, this means that players will be able to access their Witcher 3 saves on different platforms than the one they initially played on. Below, you can see exactly how to take advantage of The Witcher 3’s new cross save system.
Cross save in The Witcher 3
CD Projekt RED basically carried over the cross-save system from Cyberpunk 2077 to The Witcher 3. Players can store their autosaves, most recent manual saves, and quick saves in the cloud, which can then be accessed on different platforms. The caveat is that players can only have one active cross save on any platform, so you can’t move different saves with save and scrub plans across platforms. Of course, this new feature also only applies to current generation consoles, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S, and PC, as these are the platforms that receive the next-gen update.
In order to use the cross save functionality in The Witcher 3, you will simply need to enable the “cross progression” option within the game settings. To do this, pause The Witcher 3 and then open the Save or Load menu. From here, you’ll be able to enable cross-progression, which will then require you to log into your GoG account, CDPR’s digital video game marketplace.
If you do not have a GoG account, you can create one using a valid email. Once you’ve signed in or created a GoG account, you can go back to The Witcher 3. Now, all of your archives will be uploaded to the cloud. To access your archives on a different platform, repeat the same previous steps to enable cross progression.
Once you’re done, you can then see all of your cloud saves through the “Load game” menu, which can be accessed in-game or in The Witcher 3’s opening screen. Just select the save you want to load, and they’ll then be transferred. to which point it was being saved. The only difference now is that you will be on a different platform.
By progressing between platforms
While you’ll be able to access different saves across most platforms, there are a few caveats you need to be aware of when playing The Witcher 3 next-gen update.
To break it down, you have access to cross save progress no matter what platform you’re on. Xbox Series X | Save files can be transferred S to PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch, and vice versa, for example. Likewise, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X | save files can be transferred S to PC and PC save files can be transferred between different PCs and PC accounts (Steam to GoG).
For example, if you start saving a file on Steam or GoG and want to access it on PS5, you won’t be able to. Although, you can transfer a save file created on PS5 to Steam or GoG on PC. It’s unclear why PC save files should remain on PC, but that’s how The Witcher 3’s cross-progression feature is set up.
The Witcher 3 Next Gen Update goes live Wednesday, December 14th for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X | S.
