Vicky Kaushal on Bollywood’s failure at the box office: We’ve clearly told audiences ‘acchhi picture banao’
Vicky Kaushal He is finally happy to perform the typical Bollywood song ‘naach-gaana’ in Govinda Nam Mera. The actor known for his intense roles has presented a masala artist outside the home for the first time in his career. The actor has done a string of films in which his honest acting chops and serious choice of stories and characters have won the hearts of audiences and critics alike.
In this interview with indianexpress.com, Vicky talks about how he came to Govinda Naam Mera, a film he calls “fun concocting” and shows his love for dance. The actor also gives his two cents on how the box office game has changed since the Covid-19 pandemic and why he thinks it’s easy to see if a movie will do better at the box office.
Vicky Govinda describes Naam Mera as a fun concoction, a movie he wants viewers not to take too seriously and just laugh after all the pain and loss everyone has been through throughout the pandemic. He says, “I am so thankful that I got into this fabrication, because I still remember Shashank talking about the movie for the first time, it was before the second phase of the Covid-19 pandemic. He said we live in such terrifying times where people are so scared and all you watch (On OTT) is also very gritty and serious, let’s make people laugh, let’s try and give them a good time. I was sold on this idea in the first place.”
Vicki himself wanted a break from the kind of serious cinema he was doing until last year. Also, I was coming out of some serious cinema with Uri: The Surgical Strike, Bhoot, Sardar Udham. As an actor, even I was hungry to explore that side and have fun on set. I play a proper loser in life, his wife beats him up, he has a girlfriend; his mother or Even his bae doesn’t care about him. He has a best friend and you think Aisa Kisiko na mile’s best friend, dushman ho usse accha. There’s a don, there’s a hip hopper, there’s a lawyer, sautela bhai, sauteli maa, there’s all sorts of confusion happening at the same time and there’s a murder mystery involved, all of this is presented with a sense of humor over the top. “We just want our viewers to have a good time and not take us too seriously,” says Vicki.
Most of Vicky’s recent releases have been on streaming platforms, including Govinda Naam Mera. Asked if he agrees that Bollywood is under pressure at the box office and what does this stage mean, Vicky said that the audience has clearly stated that they want to see only good films in cinemas, no matter what their genre is, or who the star is. or language.
“I think good movies work. In fact, people have made it very simple. If you see the graph, they’ve made it so simple, that if a movie resonates with them, no matter the language or genre or scale, they’ll give it a lot of love. They’ve The audience made it very simple, that humein acchhi lagni chaahiye picture. You see Bhool Bhulaiya (2), KGF (2) or RRR, Drishyam (2), none of them fall into the same box, they are not the same language, genre or scale, why They don’t even have the same marketing plan. Even three years ago, it was a direct proportional jitni marketing karoge, utni aapki film chalegi, but it’s not like that anymore. Today, if people like a movie, they take it up.”
“So, I think we live in times where they tell us plain and simple that banao achhi pic, we’re going to give it all our love,” Vicky assures.
Although Vicky only released one movie this year, he’s totally looking forward to 2023 as he has four movie releases. “I am very exciting because throughout Covid I have been doing films, there were three films, first with Govinda, then there is one film with Lakshmin Utkar sir with me and Sarah in it, then there is one film with YRF, another film with Dharma directed by Anand Tiwari and then Sam Bahadur Which I’m shooting now, all of these movies are coming out on the 23rd. I was really excited to be directing these stories and I’m really excited to see how people are going to respond to these characters.”
2023 will be another deciding factor in Vicky’s trajectory, just like 2018, the year the actor was rediscovered. He says, “The last time I had a year like this was 2018, when I had Love Per Square Foot and Raazi and Sanju and Lust Stories and Manmarziyaan all came out in the same year. I get so excited when I have more films coming up because you’ve been You shoot over and over again and play different characters, so I think one day people will see this and I’ll test them like it or not it’s very exciting.”
