Morning Report: Sean O’Malley shocked by Buddy Pemblitt vs. Jared Gordon decision: ‘Maybe I should just rewatch it’

Sean O’Malley and Paddy Pemblett have shared the two most controversial decisions of 2022.

This past October at UFC 280, O’Malley catapulted his way to the pinnacle of the bantamweight division with a massive split decision upset with former champion Petr Yan. For their efforts, the pair received Fight of the Night awards, and “Suga” admitted in his post-fight interview that it was his toughest test yet.

The vast majority of the MMA community disagreed with O’Malley as the victor and let him hear it online. After UFC 282 last weekend, Pemblitt became a similar victim of immortal theft allegations after his unanimous decision victory over Jared Gordon.

“When we all watched it, there was a bunch of people in the room,” O’Malley said on his YouTube channel. “I don’t think there was a single person who scored the match [for Pimblett] – And this is coming from me that literally everyone said a couple of months ago… If that’s how people felt watching my fight, I’m like, oh…

“Everyone in our building was like, ‘Damn, Buddy lost.’ 100 percent. Then it was a unanimous decision and I say, ‘Well, I thought Buddy won at least one round.’ But then they announced that [it was for Pimblett]. what?!”

To compare both decisions according to data from MMA decisions, 73 percent of the 3,400 total fan votes had Yan as the winner against O’Malley with 90 percent of the over 2,200 votes in favor of Gordon. The high 90 percent behind Maisie Barber’s most controversial decision of 2021 is her victory over Miranda Maverick, who scored 92 percent of the fan vote in favor of Maverick.

Unlike O’Malley in the aftermath of Yan’s bout, Pemblett was completely confident that he had won his fight. While “The Baddy” missed out on the coveted $50,000 bonus, he remains undefeated in the UFC after four straight wins, extending his overall streak to six.

“I really wish I could watch it again because I also told everyone after my fight, ‘Just rewatch it,’” O’Malley said, because I watched it again and I felt like I won it. “So maybe I just have to rewatch it and maybe I can see it differently, but the moment I watch Where to fight, I do not know. Then Buddy started shouting: Dana! [White]! 50 grams! Then Dana said, “Yeah, Fight Night.”

“I bet Paddy walks away from that fight and goes, ‘Okay, I need to call. This is when I need to connect, not get fat like a f***, and get more skilled. Because he has skills. He knows how to perform, he’s not bad. He has so much potential, where will he direct his energy? Will he get better or will he get fatter? we will see.”

I want to briefly highlight Dana’s comments about Gordon from his post-fight press officer. He inadvertently provided a perfect case for why open registration should be used. Unless someone mentioned it afterwards.
