Are Cody and Mary Brown Still Married? It’s the question “Sister Wives” viewers have been asking all season, and they finally have an answer.
In a new special, “Sister Wives: One on One” that aired on Sunday, December 18th, Meri revealed that her marriage is actually over. The 51-year-old drops the news after watching a season 17 clip in which Cody makes a bold statement about their relationship.
In the clip, he says, “I don’t consider myself married to Merry. If she wanted to move on and marry another, she wouldn’t argue with me.”
In response, Merry explains that Cody did not, in fact, tell her that their marriage was over.
“He just made the decision. I’ve never heard him say that to me,” she says.
The reality star also opens up about what it feels like to hear Cody disapprove of their marriage.
“It just doesn’t make sense to me that he would be so frustrated with Kristen (whom Cody is divorcing in 2021) and be like, ‘I just made that decision.'” We didn’t consult, we didn’t talk, she just made the decision. Then he said, “No, I do not consider myself married to Merry.”
Meri and Cody legally married in 1990 and welcomed another wife, Janelle, into the mix three years later. Kristen joined the group marriage in 1994 and Robyn followed in 2014.
In 2015, Miri was embroiled in a catfishing scandal when she entered an online relationship with someone she thought was a man but who turned out to be a female fan. Afterwards, Cody said on “Sister Wives” that he and Meri “kind of saw our marriage unravel.”
Both Meri and Cody address tensions in their marriage in Season 17, with Cody saying it is not a “functional” relationship and Meri calling Cody’s approach to marriage “disturbing”.
Even though they’ve been living separate lives throughout Season 17, viewers are left wondering if they still consider themselves married.
In her “One on One” interview, Merry explained that she was under the impression that Cody was open to fixing their relationship one day.
“Even since I was in Flagstaff, he led me to believe he was trying,” she says. You know, our one-year anniversary here in Flagstaff (was), ‘Hello to a new beginning! Unlike this last anniversary, he’s like, ‘I don’t even know why you called me, Merry.’ He’s like, We’re not married. We don’t act like we’re married.”
At that point, Meri thought they should make an official declaration that their marriage was over (as Kristen and Cody did in 2021), but Cody wasn’t interested in the idea.
“So I said to him, ‘If this is where we are, don’t you think we should address that publicly?'” And he said, ‘No, I don’t want to talk about it. I don’t want to touch on it, I don’t want it to be there publicly because I don’t want that ruling,'” she says.
Sukanya Krishnan, the special presenter on “One on One,” refers to Merry’s predicament at this moment, saying, “Where does that leave you? Are you still married to Kodi? Or, is it up to you to decide?”
Merry says, “Well, he’s already made the decision. I just saw him say it.”
Earlier in Season 17, Merry expressed her desire to work things out. She shares the same desire for her encounter with Krishnan when asked if she would consider making up with Kodi.
“I would. I certainly would. But I don’t think he’s interested.”
A total of three “One on One” specials will air over the next few weeks, and Meri’s reveal won’t be the only moment that will blow your mind in the future. In a trailer for one of the specials, Janelle also announced that she and Cody had broken up months ago.
“Janelle has made it very clear to me that she is enjoying her life without me,” Cody says in response.
Meanwhile, Janelle introduces the next clue in the clip, saying, “I think if we really sat down, we’d look at each other and say ‘Really? “We broke up a few months ago.”
