The 2022 red carpet circuit—full of experimentation, self-expression, and play—was one to remember.
The year saw a significant uptick in celebrities dabbling in archival fashion, with some moments — like Kim Kardashian’s Marilyn Monroe gown at the Met Gala — proving more controversial than others. Meanwhile, many red carpet attendees seemed to embrace an “anything goes” approach — from Brad Pitt’s sexy linen skirt suit to Julia Roberts’ playful digs at co-star George Clooney.
But amid the clothing mayhem (Heidi Klum’s worm costume deserves an honorable mention) there were many stylish and idiosyncratic fashion moments.

Zoe Kravitz wears Oscar de la Renta at the New York premiere of The Batman

The world press tour for The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kraftiz, was full of nods to the film’s characters. But the pinnacle of the red carpet, which spanned three countries, had to be Kravitz’s Oscar de la Renta gown, which was worn to the film’s New York City premiere. The column gown featured gothic corset detailing along with a two-paneled cat silhouette in homage to Kravitz’s role as Catwoman.

In May, celebrities interpreted the Met Gala’s theme, “Gilded Glamor,” in a variety of ways, with some opting for more historical accuracy than others (Kim Kardashian’s controversial Marilyn Monroe dress was taken from another era entirely). Meanwhile, Blake Lively’s gown was an undisputed triumph and a symbolic tribute to New York City’s gilded architecture. The Versace custom debut is gathered into an oversized satin bow, which is pulled back to reveal a long, draped skirt across the stairs. In addition to the color of the dress, in homage to the Statue of Liberty’s motif, the collection included details of some of the city’s most famous landmarks from the Empire State Building to Grand Central Station. Even her crown was a nod to Lady Liberty, with 25 stones to represent the 25 windows of the iconic statue’s crown.

This year, after rising to fame in 2021 while playing Princess Diana in the fourth season of the Netflix drama “The Crown,” Emma Corren has cemented herself as a red carpet stunt. Whether it’s the zany Loewe airless bra worn at the 2022 Olivier Awards or the 19th-century Dandy-inspired Miu Miu ensemble for the Met Gala (complete with top hat), Corin has consistently shown how to prioritize fun and fantasy above all else. another thing. The Goldfish Dress, a one-shoulder mini dress with a bubble shape and a sparkly finish, is printed with an orange goldfish.

While Jada Pinkett Smith’s red carpet look was somewhat overshadowed by her husband’s infamous slap, the sparkling emerald green gown was one of the most eye-catching outfits of the night. The dress, designed by Glenn Martens for Jean Paul Gaultier, was revealed on the runway at Paris Haute Couture Week in January and featured a bodycon bodice, a high, flared neckline, and a sculpted flowy skirt.

“Call Me by Your Name” actor Timothée Chalamet graced the red carpet at this year’s Venice Film Festival in a backless red halter-neck jumpsuit designed by French designer and close friend Haider Ackermann to promote his new cannibal film “Bones and All.” The bold went viral, adding to Chalamet’s growing list of boundary-defying menswear.

At this year’s Billboard Music Awards, Doja Cat designed her outfit around her highly nominated album “Planet Her.” The other look, featuring a gold Saturn-shaped purse and a corset sculpted with two vertically protruding horns, was from Daniel Rosebery’s sci-fi-inspired “Planet Schiaparelli” collection—which debuted at Paris Haute Couture Week in January.
