Dark Souls creator Miyazaki had no idea why Elden’s ring would work – IGN
FromSoftware’s Elden Ring took home the grand prize at the PlayStation Partner Awards 2022 Japan Asia held earlier today in Tokyo. The grand prize was given to the two games developed in the Asia region with the highest worldwide sales, and Elden Ring took the honor alongside Genshin Impact. As of the end of June, Elden Ring has sold over 16 million copies worldwide.
Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki took part in a question-and-answer session with the media during the PlayStation Partner Awards, where he was asked what he thought was the reason for the game’s resounding success.
FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki accepts the grand prize for the Elden Ring at the 2022 PlayStation Partner Awards.
Miyazaki replied, “Honestly, I haven’t analyzed it much.” βIt’s true that sales were higher than those of our previous games, but I have no idea why. So even if I wanted to reproduce that success, I wouldn’t be able to,β he laughed.
He said he intended to continue making games “in the same way as before”, without allowing himself to be affected by the success of Elden Ring.
“I try not to think about it too much, because I think it would be nice to analyze it in depth and try to replicate it consciously in another game,” said Miyazaki.
Miyazaki is happy with the sales of the Elden Ring
However, Miyazaki said he was pleased with the sales and acclaim Elden Ring was getting, and that it would lead to a more fulfilling development process for him and his team at FromSoftware, allowing them to create future games that were more true to their own style.
Miyazaki was also asked what he thought of the various comments made by players in the wake of the game’s success, to which he revealed that he was careful to avoid overexposing players’ feedback.
βI can’t listen to every comment from our players, and if I only receive select parts of the feedback, it might affect my future decisions as a developer, which I find somewhat unsettling. I know I personally can’t be completely objective, so I try to avoid direct exposure to many opinions.”
“
On the other hand, Miyazaki said that Elden Ring attracted many players who had not played FromSoftware before, which he mentioned when players first discovered Demon Souls. “It’s a nostalgic feeling,” he said.
Elden Ring and Genshin Impact are among the major winners
Genshin Impact also won the Grand Prize for the second year in a row. In addition to the Grand Prize, Elden Ring also won the User’s Choice Award, along with Earth Defense Force 6, Stray, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin.
Other award winners include: Final Fantasy XIV, Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles, Resident Evil: Village, Gran Turismo 7, and Apex Legends.
