Court documents detail the events leading up to the shooting on the UNM campus
A University of New Mexico student has died and a New Mexico State University athlete is recovering after they were shot during an altercation on the University of New Mexico campus Saturday morning. Newly filed court documents indicate that Brandon Travis, Jonathan Smith and a third person got into a fight at a previous game between UNM and NMSU in Las Cruces. During that fight, Smith stated in court documents, the group “jumped” and that NMSU basketball player Michael Beck was involved in that fight. The third person in the group has not been charged with a crime and has not been identified. In court documents, Smith said Travis and the third person “talked about revenge.” That’s when a 17-year-old woman said she was talking to Peake. Court documents say Travis, Smith, age 17, and the third person conspired to lure Beck onto the UNM campus and assault him. When Beck met the 17-year-old on campus on a Saturday, that was when Travis, Smith, and the third person ran into Beck. During that altercation, one of the individuals hit Peake in the leg with a baseball bat and Travis signaled that he shot Peake. Peake then fled, and according to court documents, Peake and Travis began shooting at each other. Smith and the third person ran away soon after the shooting. They went to the bedroom, changed, and threw the clothes they were wearing during the altercation into the sewer. New Mexico State Police say Travis died at the scene of the shooting and Beck was taken to the hospital. State police say the 17-year-old woman was arrested and says she was booked into a juvenile detention center which is char with aggravated battery and conspiracy. Smith was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, conspiracy to commit aggravated crime, and two counts of tampering with evidence.
