United Airlines and Boeing may announce a new deal in which to order dozens of Boeing 787 Dreamliners, the Wall Street Journal and Reuters reports. The order could be announced as soon as this month, and is expected to be significant, in a big boost for the US manufacturer.
New Dreamliners for United
Earlier this year, it was reported that United Airlines was in talks with Boeing and Airbus, looking to order at least 100 widebody. The airline was looking at the flagship A350 of the Dreamliner and Airbus. Now Boeing appears to have won the race, and both companies can announce the new order throughout the month of December.
United will use these new wide bodies to replace its older jets. The company’s wide-body fleet includes 53 Boeing 767 aircraft, including several 300ER and -400ER models, with an average age of 25 years. United also operates 96 Boeing 777s, with the -200ER and -300ER variants about 18 years old. United had 64 Dreamliners at the end of September and expects to end the year with a fleet of 68 Boeing 787s.
While it is not clear how many aircraft United Airlines will order, the announcement is expected to include a mix of confirmed orders and options for future purchases. The Wall Street Journal reported that as many as 50 aircraft could be options.

The 787 is back on the production line
If United announces a Boeing 787 Dreamliner order, it will be the most significant order in the program since Boeing resumed deliveries earlier this year. On August 8, after nearly two years, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that Boeing was ready to start delivering the 787 again after a long, agonizing process in which the American manufacturer could not stop finding problems with its wide bodies. From the gaps between the fuselage sections to the glue and fasteners, headaches were everywhere amid ever-tighter scrutiny by the FAA.
This year, Boeing has secured four orders for 38 Dreamliners. The customers are AerCap with five, China Airlines with 16, Lufthansa with seven, and unknown customers with ten.

United’s growing fleet
United Airlines is a growing airline. In June 2021, the US airline placed a huge order for 270 narrow-body aircraft produced by Airbus and Boeing. The company has signed with Boeing for 200 B737 MAX aircraft and with Airbus for 70 A321neo.
As of October 31, 2022, United Airlines had a vacant order for 348 new aircraft with Boeing, according to Boeing’s website. The carrier has yet to take delivery of 347 Boeing 737 MAX and Dreamliner 10 aircraft.
Unfilled demand with Airbus is also great. As of October 2022, the airline was expecting to take delivery of 165 new Airbus aircraft, including 120 Airbus A321neo (including 50 XLR subs) and 45 Airbus A350-900.
According to ch-aviation data, United Airlines’ fleet currently consists of 865 aircraft, including 651 narrow-body and 214 wide-body.
