Report: Jets likely to move on from Zack Wilson next season

The New York Jets quarterback situation is complicated, as Zach Wilson’s seating Thursday night led to speculation not only for the rest of the season but going forward as well.

In perhaps the biggest game of his career to date, with AFC card hopes on the line for New York at home against another playoff-hungry team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, Wilson threw a botched error. He went 9 of 18 for 92 yards with an interception and no touchdown before the Jets sat him on fourth-string quarterback Chris Streveler, who was activated before the kickoff.

Seeing that Streveler was able to move the offense more than Wilson broke the spirit of many Jets fans considering Wilson is supposed to be the franchise’s quarterback as the second overall pick last season.

Now, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, it appears the Jets don’t see him as that guy anymore, which would be a massive drafting error by GM Joe Douglas.

“They’ve lost all faith in Zack Wilson,” Glazer said Saturday. “Zach lost faith in himself that last game, and came away with less confidence. He expected the Jets to move away from him after this season.”

Wilson hasn’t won as a starter since Week 9 against the Buffalo Bills in a close 20-17 AFC East battle. Wilson went 18 of 25 for 154 touchdowns in that game.

However, the next game with the New England Patriots raised some questions at quarterback after Wilson went 9-of-22 for 77 yards in the 10-3 loss. After the game, when asked if the offense caused the defense to slump—Gang Green was left with only three points until Marcus Jones returned a touchdown punt on the end of the game to seal the Patriots victory—Wilson simply answered “No,” which reportedly rubbed his teammates the wrong way.

But with two games left in the season, and the Jets mathematically not out of playoff contention, there’s a lot to play in the next couple of weeks. Who would be in the middle if the Jets wanted to move on from Wilson?

It’s a complicated answer as Mike White, the man who replaced Wilson once he was benched after the New England game, is dealing with broken ribs. “There are many fractures,” Glazer said, but if White can play next week against the Seattle Seahawks, he’ll start.

If not, coach Robert Saleh’s words after losing 19-3 to the Jaguars on Thursday suggested Wilson would be under center.

“We haven’t seen the end of it,” he told reporters.

Could Saleh also talk about the future of the Jets quarterback as well as the last two games of the regular season? It’s a tough, and crucial, decision for the Jets brass as they still hope to break their 11-year drought.
