Turns out we’re getting the Sondheim musical on Broadway in fall 2023 after all! The current Off-Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth Cheerfully we roll along, which is currently playing a sold-out show at New York Theater Workshop through January 22 (read reviews here), will transfer to Broadway in fall 2023, with theater dates and venues to be announced. The production will be its first on Broadway since its original short premiered in 1981.
The production stars stay with the production. Daniel Radcliffe will play Charlie Kringas, Jonathan Groff as Franklin Shepherd, Lindsey Mendes as Mary Flynn, Crystal Joy Brown as Jussie Carnegie, Katie Rose Clarke as Beth Shepherd, and Reg Rogers as Joe Josephson. Additional castings will be announced.
Maria Friedman will again direct, with choreography by Tim Jackson and orchestration by Jonathan Tunick. Additional creative team members will be revealed in the coming months.

With a book by Furth, an adaptation of the George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart play of the same name; A Sondheim version, the musical traces the lives of three friends who have been navigating the entertainment industry over three decades—in reverse chronological order. Sondheim’s score includes songs like “Old Friends,” “Now You Know,” “Franklin Shepard, Inc.” and “Good Thing Going,” and “Not a Day Goes By.”
The work was not a success in its first Broadway run, running for only 16 performances and ending the series of genre-defining collaborations between Sondheim and director Hal Prince. Along with the popularity of the series’ original album on Broadway, a revised version of the show has turned the work into a cult favorite. This current production was originally staged at London’s Menier’s Chocolate Factory in 2012 and later transferred to the West End, where it won an Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. The Huntington Theater in Boston made its North American premiere in 2017.
