After an incomplete third pass with Denver trailing Kansas City 27-0 with 3:45 left in the first half, Gowdy took off his helmet and chased across the field yelling at the line to Trip Sutter. As the two pass by, Jody bumps into Sutter, who appears to be practically ignoring the whole incident as he brought the soccer ball onto the field.
According to the NFL’s fines schedule for the 2022 season, a first offender for unsportsmanlike conduct can be fined $13,261, as was Jody. However, a first offender for having physical contact with an official could be fined $37,232 and a first offender for verbal or non-physical offense against an official could be fined $29,795.
While Gowdy was not penalized, Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett said he knew what happened.
“I haven’t seen that happen on the field,” Hackett said Monday. “The referee told me it was done, so I went and spoke to him right away. I spoke to him. He definitely knew he was wrong. It’s unacceptable. You can’t do that. We dealt with it, and I know he knows he can’t do it. I know he was Very frustrating at the time, but it’s just something you can’t do.”
After the match, Jody said he let his frustration get the better of him.
“On this particular play I got pulled over,” Jody said, “and I was just frustrated that we don’t have things, so I was out playing frustrated. I just wanted to make a play for my team, and I feel like at that point I was just being held up and it should have been a call. How to control my anger and move on from there.”
At that point in the game, Jody had a 3-yard reception. After his bull run, Gowdy caught seven passes for 70 yards and three touchdowns.
Gowdy caught touchdown passes 18 yards with 1:35 left in the first half, 5 yards with nine seconds remaining in the first half and 7 yards with 10:49 left in the game. He did so playing in a different position with Cortlandt Sutton out of the squad with a hamstring injury.
“I give Jerry a lot of credit,” Hackett said. “When Cortlandt went down last week, we decided to make a move for our team to put him in the same position Cortlandt had as the backside X position, as we call him, and we still wanted to put him in the slot, so he had a bigger role in the different positions we wanted. He embraced it.” I think he was really excited about it, and he took advantage of it.”
Jeudy has lined up as a slot receiver 49 percent of the time this season.
“I just think the coach put me in a great position to make plays,” Jody said. “I feel like everyone who executes them plays to be able to drive the ball and make them play.”
Gowdy became the fourth Alabama alumnus with at least three receptions in an NFL game.
The Green Bay Packers’ Don Hutson caught three receptions in a 28-7 victory over the Cleveland Rams on October 30, 1938, a 22-17 victory over the Washington Redskins on November 30, 1941, and four in a 57-21 victory over the Detroit Lions on October 7 1945.
Calvin Ridley had three receptions in overtime for the Atlanta Falcons’ 43-37 loss to the New Orleans Saints on September 23, 2018, and Amari Cooper had three in the Dallas Cowboys’ 29-23 overtime win against the Philadelphia Eagles on December 23, 2018. 9, 2018. Cooper caught a touchdown pass in overtime. Ridley didn’t.
Gowdy had three touchdown receptions in his first two seasons combined, and three more TDs in his first 10 games of the 2022 campaign.
“There’s a lot I think we can see from Jerry,” Hackett said.
Denver hosts the Arizona Cardinals at 3:05 PM CST on Sunday.
Gowdy caught his third touchdown pass against Kansas City from quarterback Brett Ripien, and they would attempt another touchdown against the Cardinals. The Broncos announced that No. 1 quarterback Russell Wilson will not play Sunday due to a concussion.
With a 3-10 record, Denver plays the series in another season. The Broncos have had double-digit losses in five of the past six seasons.
