Dancing with the Stars reveals the winner for Season 31
Dancing with the starsSeason 1 is over on Disney+! A lot of changes have already been announced for tonight’s Season 31 finale. First, Judge Len Goodman and Cheryl Burke called it quits. Then, Disney gave Bob a shout-out and rewarded Bob Iger with his old executive seat. Desperate Plea of Cheap Seats, Mr. Iger: Bringing Mirrorball Back to ABC! I think we can all agree that this streaming experiment has gone the polka dot way: no one wants Disney+ anywhere near a ballroom. Maybe moving it home to Mondays on ABC could be your next major decision after cutting the price of skipping Genie + line service at the parks?
Speaking of make-up business, it’s time for couples to bring back their offerings from the season.
Wayne Brady and Whitney Carson. The game show host knew instinctively that he would be asked to repeat the quick step from week 6. Len Goodman implored Brady to improve his frame and show off his “boyish grin” during his performance of Jackie Wilson’s “Higher and Higher”. Brady showed signs of progress, but Goodman wasn’t entirely satisfied. “I have to say I thought your frame was stronger…but it needs more movement,” Goodman said. “You know I like you… I gotta say what I’m saying, it could have gone with a little more flow.” result: 36 out of 40
Shangela and Gleb Savchenko. With Bruno Tonioli as their mentor, the duo revisited their fast-paced move from week two. Dressed in white hats and silk, crystal-encrusted outfits, the pair opened the show by jumping on the verge of Rochelle Diamante’s “Queen Bee” – but Shangela missed a key move at the start that didn’t go unnoticed by the judges. “A lot of people inspire me but you excite me,” said Carrie Ann Inaba. “I grew up and that’s what the redemption tour is all about.” result: 36 out of 40
The competition took a short break to say goodbye to Burke, who announced Sunday that she’s leaving the show after 26 seasons. The two-time Mirror Ball champion danced tango and Argentine samba to the Copacabana with Pasha Pashkov and Louis van Amstel before giving the final speech to the audience. “This is my family,” she said, “everyone who’s been a part of this cast, every single person, thank you for believing in me.” “Thank you for helping me find my voice. You guys have been a part of my identity. Thank you for pushing me to be the greatest artist I can be.”
Gabe Wendy and Val Chmerkovskiy. D’Amelio’s lone competition was directed by Derek Hough to revisit Cha Cha from Bond night during week 3 of the competition. Dressed in Boa’s cutest miniskirt, Windey performed to Pete Rodriguez’s “I Like It.” “Gabe, you have an uncanny power to embody every dance. I really redeemed that cha-cha,” Hough said. I did well.” full mark
Charlie D’Amelio and Mark Ballas. Does the front runner really need to redeem herself with past performance? Apparently: Inaba suggested repeating the carrion from the fifth week during Prom Night. And what a recurrence: Dancing to Little Mix’s “Grown,” D’Amelio positively shined during a dazzling performance of the Ballas. “This was amazing,” Inaba said. “You proved incredible this whole season. That’s you, you just danced your heart out.” full mark
Next, the free round.
Brady and Carson. The game show host channeled his best Bruno Mars in a medley of Ciara’s “24K Magic” and “Get Up” with Chamillionaire. It wasn’t his most impressive performance of the season—and he didn’t do the backflip he asked for at rehearsal—but he was pleased with his “perfect” hat for the season. “It seems to me that you have been struck on your hands,” said Tonioli. “Honestly, you always perform like the greatest showman on the greatest show on TV.” full mark
D’Amelio and Pallas. The reality show star opened up about how she stopped dancing after absorbing the hate and negativity from her TikTok followers. Then he came Dancing with the starsAnd it has changed! I fell in love with dancing again. What a way to end her ballroom run: D’Amelio’s number with the Ballas was a fine mixture of the best of all ballroom – waltzes, tangos, quick dances and some tap dancing! – to “Us Again” by Pinar Toprak. Man, does Ballas deserve some extra pay for his comeback this season. “I know what it’s like to lose the love of dancing,” Hough said, tearfully. “It was so powerful, the storytelling and the narration, but most importantly the two of you, the connection.” full mark
Shangela and Savchenko. The show’s first drag artist used the final rehearsal package to pay tribute to Savchenko and how supportive he was during the season. The two expressed their love for each other before embarking on an affair Mother of all free people to “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child and “Call Me Mother” by RuPaul. where do I start? Shangela posing on a sky-high platform before breaking into some raging bobs and locking? Savchenko embodies the new ego named Natasha and demolishes the house? RuPaul, eat your heart: drag is finally taking over the dance floor and Dancing with the stars All the better for it. “For the first time in 31 seasons I forgot to vote because I was so fascinated by everything,” Goodman said. “It had a performance, it had an entertainment.” full mark
Windey and Chmerkovskiy. When he thinks of The Bachelorette, Chmerkovskiy says it reminds him of strength and sexuality, so he wanted to incorporate that into their final performance. Dance to “Cell Block Tango” from Chicago, the pair kicked off their caged number before exploding into a fierce Broadway-worthy tango. Bad break for Windey, though; She seemed to stumble when the number was over. But you should have seen when a group of men pushed her into the air! “You are so dazzling tonight because something has definitely changed,” Inaba said. “I am so proud of you for making this journey.” full mark
Before announcing the winner, host Tyra Banks announced that the finale had the most votes this season. (If only we knew how many of you were watching).
Fourth place went to Shangela and Savchenko. the problem.
Third place went to Brady and Carson.
Second place went to Windey and Chmerkovskiy.
And in the most negatively impactful finale of all, D’Amelio and the Ballas win!
Things we learned from Season 31: No one cares if two men dance together. Fans still want to see the show Create Celebrity Dancers, they don’t celebrate trained dancers. Three seasons of Tyra Banks is a lot, thank you very much. Television cannot replace a man like Len Goodman. And Conrad Green must never leave his role as executive producer again.
Until next season, hall fans?
