John Mayer explains why he shouldn’t “date this much”, talking past “womanizer”.
John Mayer is no longer “dating that much” six years after his sober flight.
“Dating isn’t a codified activity for me anymore, it doesn’t exist in a kind of…it’s not patterned anymore,” the singer explained on her “Call Her Daddy” podcast on Wednesday.
“I stopped drinking six years ago,” the Grammy winner went on to tell host Alex Cooper. “So I don’t have liquid courage. I only have dry courage.”
“You have to be honest,” he continued. “You have to be really, blatantly honest.”
Later Mayer addressed his “womanizer” past.
“It is what it is,” he said of the label. “Here’s the role I’m playing in the big TV show that I didn’t write, but that’s fine. I might have had a hand in it or something.”
The guitarist claimed that he was “made to believe” from a young age that getting the romantic attention was an “accident”, so he learned to “leverage” on it.
“I think people would be surprised to know it wasn’t for me, do you know the man behind the tree meme?” Mayer asked, rubbing his hands together. “It was…more like [looking around and wondering]’me?'”
The songwriter, who has made headlines over the years for dating Jessica Simpson, Katy Perry, Jennifer Aniston, and more A-listers, also set the record straight with his 2001 hit song “Your Body Is a Wonderland.”
The American Music Award winner confirmed that the poem is not based on any previous celebrities, stating that he had “never met” a famous person when he wrote the lyrics.
“This was about my first girlfriend [in high school]Meyer explained. “I was 21 when I wrote that song and I was feeling nostalgic for a 16-year-old.”
While on tour earlier this year, the artist told the audience he wished people would stop telling him to settle down.
“I’m fine because the left side of my bed is a row of pillows. I sleep next to a row of pillows,” Meyer joked at the time.
He added that he was doing “very well” and believed he would “meet someone” one day.
“When I do that, it’s going to be additive and wonderful and wonderful,” Meyer said onstage. “But until then, I’ll be fine.”
