AOC’s climate change documentary earns just $80 per theater despite rave reviews from critics
The new climate change documentary by New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez played in theaters over the weekend, grossing $80 per theater.
Shot over four years, the new film “To the End” follows four young women, Cortez, activist Varshini Prakash, climate policy writer Rihanna John Wright, and political strategist Alexandra Rojas, as they try to pass sweeping climate change legislation in Congress.
The film currently has an 88% “fresh” from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and has yet to receive an audience score.

“Rep. Ocasio-Cortez offers the best screen antidote to despair — she’s funny, and she’s a shrewd political strategist,” wrote Teo Pogby of The New York Times.
“To the End is set to ignite more Americans to take action,” RogertEbert.com’s Nick Allen wrote in his review.
The documentary debuted on more than 120 screens over the weekend, but took in less than $10,000 in all theaters and came in 33rd overall at the box office.
Many of the Oscars’ films that were praised during film festivals have had a hard time excelling in theaters this year, with critics attributing the decline in audiences to the rise of streaming platforms, increasing public distrust of critics’ scores, and topics that don’t interest a large sector. from the audience.
The latter factor may be the largest contributor to the film’s meager earnings, as climate change documentaries in the past several years have failed to attract a large audience.

Earlier this year, “Territory,” a National Geographic film about indigenous people struggling with the effects of climate change, took in less than $70,000 during its entire run in theaters.
Rachel Lears and Robin Plotnick, the creators of “To the End,” previously worked on “Knock Down the House,” which revolved around the 2018 congressional campaigns of Cortez, Amy Villella, Corey Bush, Paula Jean Swearengen, and four other progressive Democrats.
While the documentary “Knock Down the House” garnered critical acclaim, with a score of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences had a very different opinion of the project, with a score of 11%.
One audience member described the film as a “throwaway snooze-fest,” while others shut the film down because of its “very polarizing message.”

“I feel like I have to watch a completely different movie than the movie [the critics] One viewer said “It was so terrible, and it actually made me hate Alexandria Cortez after it was all over. I now see the audience score and I think it’s more accurate compared to the critics.”
In 2020, a seven-minute film about The Green New Deal, narrated by Ocasio-Cortez and drawn by Molly Crabapple, was nominated for an Emmy.
