Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach dies

Very sad news from the Mississippi State Athletics program and the Leach family. Mike Leach, head football coach at Michigan State University, has died. He was 61 years old. “Coach Mike Leach (Monday) passed away from complications related to heart disease. He was a giving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He was able to participate in an organ donation at the university as a final act of charity. He received emergency medical care at his home and was later transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Leach was in a critical condition Sunday night until his death. Leach spent three seasons at Mississippi State after being named head coach in January 2020. Last season was his best at Mississippi State University. The Bulldogs won eight games — three of which were against ranked teams — and MSU went on to pull off a 24-22 win over Ole Miss on Thanksgiving Day to secure Leach’s first Egg Bowl. The influence of “The Pirate” as he was affectionately called, in college football was huge. Leach was one of the most interesting, engaging, quirky, witty, and sometimes hilarious coaches in the game. Here are some of the most memorable moments: Leach was the mastermind behind the air raid attack that set records across the country. Having started at Cal Poly as an offensive line coach in 1987, the Wyoming native has gone on to coach college football for more than three decades, with more than 20 head coaches. His stints include Kentucky, Valdosta State, Washington State, Texas Tech and a team in Finland in a European league in the late 1980s. Leach also coached two quarterbacks outside the metro area in products Brandon Gardner Minshew (Washington State) and Will Rogers. Mississippi State is one of seven programs to go to a bowl game every year since 2010. The Bulldogs have had three berths under Leach. And as far as victories go for The Pirate, what stands out most is that his way of five wins over ranked opponents is the most for a Mississippi State head coach. He also had seven wins against ranked opponents—which makes him the most for a head coach at MSU, but after all that, Leach was known for energizing offense, developing players, and being one of the best coaches I wanted to talk to. He taught classes at Washington State and Michigan State University on rebel warfare and football strategy, among many other interests he had outside of football. Sharon will miss him and his four kids the most. His current players, former players, coaches, MSU fans and college football fans will miss him very much.
