Expert says Amber Heard’s settlement is “dedicating” Johnny Depp’s victory

Amber Hurd He agreed to pay Johnny Depp $1 million to settle his defamation lawsuit against her — a deal that “consecrates his victory” and is a “smart PR move” for the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star, experts tell Fox News Digital.

“It’s a resignation,” civil and criminal attorney Tim Parlatore said of Heard’s decision to drop her appeal. “It cements his victory. It cements his victory.”

A massive six-week libel trial in June ended in defeat for Heard.

A Virginia jury awarded Depp $15 million after he found his ex-wife had defamed him by portraying herself as a victim of domestic violence in a 2018 opinion piece. Judge Benny Azcaret lowered the sentence to $10.35 million.

The jury handed Heard only $2 million in her suit. The $1 million settlement will be paid for by one of Heard’s insurance policies.

In a lengthy statement on Instagram on Monday, Heard wrote, “I stood up for my right, and in doing so destroyed my life as I knew it.”

Heard added that the deal does not impose any restrictions on her ability to speak about the case or allegations of abuse.

“I didn’t admit it, this is not an act of privilege,” she wrote. But Parlatore noted that if she publishes another opinion piece with the same allegations that the jury found defamatory, “she can certainly be sued again, and he will win because he already has a result.”

He said, “Everything is phrased ‘I spoke my truth in court’ but she didn’t come out and say he did this or that to me.”

New York-based attorney Todd Spodak described the settlement as a “generous gesture” on Depp’s part.

“The ruling achieved its main objective, which is public justification,” he said. “You can’t get blood from a stone, and if Amber doesn’t have money, she doesn’t have it.”

He added that Depp’s $1 million pledge to charity had a rich irony after it was revealed that Heard only donated a small portion of her $7 million divorce payments which she promised would be given in full to the ACLU and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Eric Schaefer, chairman of Los Angeles-based Reputation Consulting, called the settlement “an incredibly smart PR move for Depp.”

“It shows empathy and avoids the possibility of Amber having to file for bankruptcy with the young child as the cause,” Schafer told Fox News Digital.

Depp’s lawyers, Benjamin Chew and Camille Vasquez, said the case was never about money for their client.

“We are pleased to officially close the door on this painful chapter for Mr. Dib, who made it clear throughout the process that his priority was to uncover the truth,” they said in a statement.

Spodak added that a little insight might have gone a long way for the former couple, who have been publicly feuding since their split in 2016.

“They should have taken writer Nora Ephron’s sound advice: ‘Never marry someone you don’t want to be separated from,'” he said.
