How the ‘My Year of Dicks’ Creator Shows Channing Tatum’s Oscar Moment
Fortunately we stayed in one place throughout high school. After that, I went off to college and yes, the letters went with me to my dorm room and my apartment. I lost a box of things in which were, I think, prizes and some love letters from the boys. I don’t have those anymore. no sequel. It would probably be better, really, that I didn’t have it because it would probably be a lot better in memory.
How did you get the chance to edit part of the book?
FX plugged it out. [Originally, it was going to air on the FXX adult animation anthology show Cake.] I just met them to talk about animation and gave them a bunch of my stuff. Megan Reed said, “I think your diary is a wonderful space for animation. You can really play with that sound.” Originally, they were talking about it the way the book is presented, where my little one and I are now. I tried it that way at first, but I always felt like I was judging myself and inviting the audience to think, “This girl is doomed or stupid.” And if you can see me, you know I kind of ended up kind of fine. After I saw Skate Kitchen And Mid 90’s Really close together, I realized you don’t have to get in the way of young people living.
Did you always know these were the stories you wanted to capture from the book, or were they Megan Reed’s choice?
No, I recently came across the email I wrote after we first came across this idea. A lot of the pitch is quite the same, but there’s some other stuff I’ve thrown in there like, “That’s going to be a good story when we get to it.” If we keep making those things and turn them into the series we hope to be, yeah, there’s more.
The film has been presented in many international festivals. He has a keen sense of place and time, but were you surprised that the audience’s experiences and emotions were so universally understood? Audiences on South By Southwest will experience this Houston story in a different way than audiences in Iceland, but it resonated with both and more.
I mean Kazakhstan! I was surprised. But this started to happen even within our group [working on the film] Because we were not all the same age. The first time we were shown it all in Iceland and they were so excited I just burst into tears. It was an unexpected feeling: we never thought we’d see it on a giant movie screen, and in Iceland?
It wasn’t just seeing it work; This was the feeling I was talking about. Everyone is very happy, and then falls silent with the end. I think part of it is the way it fades away, but there’s this nostalgia that comes over everyone. It is a private sharing of a universal feeling. This was really nice. As much as we laugh about it all, you eventually leave nicely with your much younger ex-self.
I hoped it would make the person feel that it was okay not to want sex, without saying it. It’s interesting to me when people are like, “I’m so glad she waited to have sex with Sam.” And I’m like, “They’re not having sex. They’re barely cuddling. There’s no basis for what we’re leaving them with.”
Many people are eager to forget their high school years. This may be why it resonates so much, people feel things they haven’t tried to feel in a long time. What makes you want to go back to this period in your life, in your work?
I don’t know that I left him before. If you think about it, I’ve gone from writing this stuff to writing synopses, which are just heartwarming love letters to TV episodes. There’s an instant jump from “Dear David, the skater I only know from riding the bus” to “Dear Gilmore GirlsI swear every word of this is true. “It made me understand fandom, which was very beneficial to Disney. High school is when your heart finds a real fandom, rather than a sticker, of someone who exists.
