USA vs Netherlands: Everything you need to know about the World Cup Round of 16 match

The US men’s national team enters another “do-or-die” scenario on Saturday when it faces the Netherlands in the World Cup Round of 16.

It would be win-or-go home for the Americans and Dutch in the playoffs. And the USA did not lose a match in the group stage – drawing with Wales and England and defeating Iran in the final for the privilege of playing the Netherlands. The Dutch have not lost yet – they beat Senegal and Qatar and drew with Ecuador.

The Netherlands scored three goals from Cody Gakbo – more than the United States scored in the entire tournament. The United States scored a goal against Wales and one against Iran. Tim Weah and ‘Captain America’ Christian Pulisic both hit against Iran.

The United States is looking to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2002, when Landon Donovan and Brian McBride roamed the court.

Historically, the Netherlands national team has been a great team, even though they did not reach the World Cup finals in 2018. The Dutch finished third in 2014 and were runners-up in the 2010 tournament.

Dutch history in North America dates back to the 17th century when Fort Nassau was established in present-day Albany, New York. The Dutch colonists also established a trading post in lower Manhattan and called it New Amsterdam. The Dutch influence within the present-day borders of the United States is far richer than the history of football between the two countries.

The two teams played a friendly match in 2015 – their only match.

Memphis Depay, who is currently in the squad, scored in the 53rd minute to give the Netherlands a 3-1 lead. However, the USA would score three straight goals to come back and win the match, 4-3, with Bobby Wood scoring the go-ahead goal in the 90th minute.
